About Us

Baritaka concentrates on booking Eco Lodge/Homestay surf camps in the South Pacific……primarily in the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Papua New Guinea (Bougainville Island) area.

The North Solomon Islands and Southern PNG (Bougainville Island) region is considered The Last Frontier for warm water surf exploration. We have charted most of the surf spots in this region and have extensive knowledge concerning the cultural sensitivity of the area.

Fiji is a transit spot for most travelers coming to the Solomon Islands, might as well surf Cloudbreak (or spend a day or two looking around Fiji) on your to and from the Kariki Area of the Solomon Islands. We can arrange a wonderful Homestay option for you in NABILA, which has great access to the Tavarua Surfing Area.

Baritaka is the name of the reef pass closest to Tautsina Island in Bougainville where I (the owner of Baritaka Surf Travel) have a home with my wife Sylvia Dareku. We look forward to booking your next South Pacific adventure whether it be surfing, diving, fishing or sightseeing.

Prices are based on each person per day and includes food, boat hire with captain, and lodging. Boat fuel sold separately.

Bougainville (Papua New Guinea)

Toutsina Surf lodge

Autonomous Region of Bougainville

Located 2 miles from Kieta Harbor….Tautsina was the first surf camp ever built on Bougainville. Baritaka Reef Pass (a fun left-hander) is a mile away and Takanupe Island (a perfect left) is 3 miles away. We can easily access Vito Village, Iwi Plantation and Arui (all really good waves). Tautsina is a simple no frills surf camp enjoyed by people who like privacy and traditional customs. Price includes food, boat and lodging: $80 USD per person per night. In addition you will receive 3 traditional meals, skipper/surf guide, and shared accommodation (5 Person Max Occupancy). Fuel for the boat is not included. The more people, the less money spent per person on gas. A private boat hire can be arranged at an extra cost.

Takanupe Island, 10 minutes by boat from Tautsina, is the best wave on Bougainville. The wave is a barreling left that breaks over a shallow reef. An easy takeoff sends you into a clean wall with a tubing air section on the inside. The spot is located inside the lagoon and it is usually protected from the wind. Strong currents are not an issue because of Takanupe Island’s reef pass. This is the wave you’re going to want to surf every day. Takanupe does not break on a north swell. The swell has to be out of the North East and luckily that is the prevailing swell direction during the winter months, from November to March.

Tautsina Surf Lodge, Tautsina Island, Autonomous Region of Bougainville. Privacy, Traditional Culture, Beautiful Beaches, Centrally Located.

Koromira Homestay

Bougainville has many waves but nothing compares to Arui when it comes to BIG waves. Koromira Village is a 10 minute boat ride from Koromira. Guests will be staying in a home owned by The Rising Sun Hotel. This home is a go to spot for accommodation in Arawa. Koromira is not expensive for groups of 2 – 5, but a single traveler might find it a bit out of their budget. The price for accommodations, which might include a boat hire with skipper and surf guide, lodging, and food is as follows:

1 Person = 1,040 Kina Per Night
2 People = 520 Kina Per Person Per Night
3 People = 347 Kina Per Person Per Night
5 People = 260 Kina Per Person Per Night
6 People = 208 Kina Per Person Per night

There are 4 waves close by:
Arui:
A big wave right hander
Iwi: A left reef point
First Break: A gnarly right reef pass
Second Break: An soft left reef

Many other waves can be reached within a 1 to 2 hour boat ride from Karimira. Fuel is not included. A truck hire is available for 750 Kina with one tank of fuel included.

Traditional customs, betel nut chewing, and waterfall hikes are just some of the local attractions you might encounter. Cross border surf excursions to the Solomon Islands can be arranged with enough notice.

House
Padia Village Surf Retreat
Padia is centrally located and close to Arawa Town on Bougainville Island. There are no roads going to Padia, so boating arrangements need to be made in order to access this wonderful lodging option. The price per person per night is $80 USD and includes food, transportation by boat, and lodging. Lunch and dinner will be served on check in day, and breakfast and lunch on check out day. Price does not include fuel for the boat. The fuel cost can be split between the group. Padia is the closest surf camp to Takanupe, which is the best wave in Central Bougainville, as far as we are concerned. The retreat is located around the corner from Padia Village. This is not a village stay operation. Tranquility and serenity abound.
Padia Village House
Vito Village Surf Lodge

North of Arawa Town on the Island Of Bougainville is Vito Village. This village is home to the longest wave in the South West Pacific. Right next to the village is a 400 yard long left cobblestone point perfect for longboarders and beginners. The rivermouth can get barreling but it’s the point section that draws all the kids from the village out to surf. There is an ever changing group of local kids that ride the point on hand made wood boards. Vito is simply magical. The Womans Center a 3 minute walk to the point. This is where visiting surfers will be housed. Prices are very reasonable. Food and lodging is $80 USD per person per night. A care hire is available and the public bus travels to and from Arawa, about 5 times a day. A 30hp boat with skipper can be arranged for hire ($80 USD (plus fuel) a day…not per person). There are islands offshore that have waves and Takanupe is about half an hour south by boat. Also there is a perfect right hand rivermouth sand point to the north that can be accessed by car or by boat. The best part about Vito are the kids that love it when visiting surfers come to ride their waves with them.

This location is good for all sized groups that want to interact with the village people and learn their customs. Great hiking and fishing can be done close to shore. Local canoes are available, free of charge. Price including food, lodging and boat hire is $500 Solomon dollars ($63 USD) per person per night. Cross border surf excursions to Bougainville can be arranged with enough advanced notice. Surfers buy their own boat fuel. The more people in the group the less it will cost per person for surfing days because fuel costs can be split among the group.

Fiji

Nabila Village Surf Guide
